Ayrton Senna and the fight for the first metres

The grid launch is a race’s first test of space: cars fan out, and every line into the opening stretch can matter.
Ayrton Senna’s starts are the focus here: a field of open-wheel cars released together, then spreading across the straight as drivers search for room. The green lights are the cue; the first challenge is turning that split second into a clean route through traffic.
There is little margin in a crowded launch. Hold a line and a rival may close it; move across and the space can disappear just as quickly. The footage shows cars accelerating in separated lanes before bunching back together, making the opening stretch a contest over position as much as speed.
The detail is in how quickly the field changes shape: rows become a pack, and the available gaps narrow.
