Chris Bumstead: doubt does not rule out being a champion

Chris Bumstead reflects on living with doubt while continuing to perform and progress.
Chris Bumstead does not describe doubt as something he has had to eliminate. In this interview, he says it has lingered in his mind even as he has continued to perform and progress.
“Who’s to say that I can’t have that doubt in my mind while being a champion?” he asks. The point is not that doubt disappears when results come; in Bumstead’s account, the two can exist together.
It is a measured reflection on the gap between private uncertainty and what an athlete can still achieve. Bumstead says that, over the past five years, he has been able to perform, progress and be the best in the world with doubt still present. His argument is simple: feeling uncertain does not, by itself, settle what he can do.
