Tom Platz and the extra effort of assisted leg extensions
SportLocation Fitness Desk · 13 Oct 2026
In a leg-extension set, assistance at the lower legs becomes part of the effort.
Tom Platz’s leg-extension set is not a solo effort. As he leans back in the machine, another person crouches beside his lower legs, helping through the repetitions. The on-screen label calls them “forced reps”.
That assistance is the detail that gives the sequence its edge. The movement is still Platz’s, but someone else is close enough to help keep the set going. It turns a straightforward machine exercise into a shared task: one person pushing through the extension, the other lending support at the point of effort.
The montage also shows calf work and barbell squats, but the leg-extension scene is the clearest look at that partnership in action. The helper’s hands are right beside Platz’s lower legs as he continues the set.
