Lionel Messi and the changing shape of a set piece

SportLocation Football Desk · 12 Oct 2026

A wide stadium view shows the set-piece formation around goal before players gather near the penalty area.

Lionel Messi is attached to this footage, which keeps its view of the set piece at a distance. The goal, a compact line of players and others spaced around the penalty area are all in frame.

That arrangement shifts as play develops. By the end, a cluster of players has gathered near the area while others remain spread across the pitch. The view gives the sequence its shape: a crowded line in front of goal, then bodies collected nearby.

It is a small, practical detail of football at a set piece: the players around the goal do not stay in one fixed picture. Here, the final image is the group gathered near the penalty area.
