Neymar and the free-kick problem
SportLocation Football Desk · 6 Oct 2026
A free kick is shaped by the wall and goalkeeper before the ball is struck.
Neymar’s free-kick montage keeps returning to the same small patch of grass: the ball set outside the area, a wall between it and goal, and the goalkeeper waiting behind.
That setup is the problem to solve. The wall blocks a direct route; the keeper must cover the space left open. A strike has to clear the first obstacle and still find a way past the second. In one sequence, a red-shirted player stands over the ball as white shirts form the barrier. The goal and keeper remain in view beyond them.
