Carlos Alcaraz and the clay-court reset
SportLocation Tennis Desk · 9 Sept 2026
Carlos Alcaraz stays low, strikes through the forehand and gets straight back to work on the clay.
Carlos Alcaraz spends this rally doing the unglamorous part of clay-court tennis very well: getting set early, swinging through the forehand and recovering before the next ball arrives.
The first image is the most telling. Alcaraz is already in a low split-step, racket out in front, which gives him a clean base to move from rather than a scramble after contact.
From there, the forehand is not just a shot but a reset. He turns, drives through the ball and then shuffles back into position, keeping the exchange alive instead of over-hitting for a winner.
That pattern repeats through the clip. The body stays active, the feet keep working and the racket drops quickly after contact so he can be ready again almost immediately.
On clay, that is the point: win the space first, then the point. Alcaraz does both here, one recovery step at a time.
